This summer, Sherr Law Group had the pleasure of welcoming Teo Bautista to the firm through the Montgomery Bar Association’s Robert E. Slota Jr. Internship and Development Program. What began as a summer internship has turned into an ongoing opportunity: after a successful summer that concluded with special recognition from the program, Teo will continue working with Sherr Law Group during his second year of law school.
Currently a rising second-year law student at Widener University Delaware Law School, Teo came to the firm eager to gain something law school alone cannot provide—a firsthand look at what it is actually like to practice law.
Over the course of the summer, he got exactly that.
Finding His Path to Law
Teo graduated from West Chester University in 2025 with a degree in political science, although law was not initially the path he expected to take. He began college studying pharmaceutical product development before realizing his strengths and interests were better suited elsewhere.
The change ultimately brought him back to an interest he had developed much earlier. Teo enjoyed government-focused classes in high school, and the legal profession also held special significance in his family. His mother had once planned to become an attorney herself, attending Temple before leaving school to raise her family.
As the youngest of his siblings and the first in his family to pursue the profession, Teo saw an opportunity to carry that interest forward.
Finding the Right Fit at Sherr Law Group
Teo connected with Sherr Law Group through the Robert E. Slota Jr. Internship and Development Program, and he quickly realized the firm was a good fit.
His interview with Tony Sherr stood out because the conversation went beyond academics and a résumé. They discussed law school, but they also talked about Philadelphia sports, hobbies, and life outside of the legal profession.
That connection continued when Teo joined the firm.
“Everyone was so nice and welcoming,” Teo said of his experience with the Sherr Law Group team.
More importantly, he was given the opportunity to do meaningful legal work.
Throughout the summer, Teo assisted with legal research and drafting and worked on assignments involving motions to compel, motions for summary judgment, and other aspects of active litigation. He also had opportunities to observe attorneys in court, including attending discovery court and seeing experienced litigators advocate for their respective positions firsthand.
Rather than simply observing from the sidelines, Teo was able to experience the day-to-day work that goes into a litigation practice.
Recognized for His Work and Leadership
Teo’s summer culminated in special recognition from the Robert E. Slota Jr. Internship and Development Program.
At the program’s concluding ceremony, Teo received an award recognizing the outstanding feedback he received from Sherr Law Group, his active participation in program events, and the leadership skills he demonstrated throughout the summer. He was one of 11 law students participating in the program at firms and organizations throughout the area.
For Teo, the recognition was particularly meaningful because of the role his family has played in his journey.
His mother once hoped to pursue a legal career herself, while his father came to the United States from Mexico in the 1990s and built a life here for their family. Teo views his opportunity to attend law school and pursue a legal career as a reflection not only of his own hard work, but also of the support and sacrifices that helped him get there.
“It means a lot to be recognized for not only my hard work, but my parents’ hard work,” Teo said.
The recognition also carried additional meaning after completing his first year of law school—a demanding experience that, like it does for many students, occasionally left Teo questioning whether he belonged. Receiving the award alongside other talented law students reinforced that his hard work was paying off and that he was moving in the right direction.
Learning What It Means to Practice Law
If there was one major lesson Teo took from his summer, it was the difference between learning to think like a lawyer and seeing what lawyers actually do every day.
Law school provides an important foundation, but working alongside the attorneys at Sherr Law Group exposed him to the practical details of litigation: interacting with opposing counsel, preparing court filings, navigating different courts’ procedural requirements, managing assignments, and adapting to the changing pace of a litigation practice.
The experience also gave him opportunities to strengthen his legal writing. Through substantive drafting assignments and feedback from the firm’s attorneys, Teo was able to continue developing skills he will carry with him throughout law school and his future career.
Looking Ahead to His Second Year of Law School
Although Teo’s formal summer internship has concluded, his time at Sherr Law Group has not.
Teo will continue working with the firm while completing his second year at Widener University Delaware Law School. He is looking forward to sharpening his research, writing, and organizational skills while continuing to build relationships with the attorneys and staff who helped make his first experience in legal practice such a positive one.
Outside of law school and the firm, Teo enjoys playing pickleball, learning to golf, reading, and going to the movies—often with his brother. He also values spending time with his family and the close group of friends he has known since elementary and middle school.
