Tony Sherr Attends Pennsylvania Society Dinner and Awards Gala

Tony Sherr Attends the 121st Pennsylvania Society Annual Dinner and Awards Gala

Once again, in December Tony Sherr of the Sherr Law Group attended the annual dinner and award gala of the Pennsylvania Society. Held on December 7, it was the 121st annual meeting of the prestigious organization.

This year’s Gold Medal honoree was Dr. Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania. The longest serving president in Penn’s history. She was named the recipient of the Society’s top honor for enhancing the access to a Penn education to first-generation students, more than doubling their enrollment at the school during her tenure. She also built its academic, engineering and healthcare schools to where Penn now is the third-largest employer in the state. As the 110th recipient of the Gold Medal, the Society will donate $50,000 in her name to the charity of her choice.

Tony is part of a long tradition of distinguished Pennsylvania Society members that include Andrew Mellon, Andrew Carnegie and Charles Schwab.

About the Pennsylvania Society

The Society is the oldest charitable institution of its kind in the United States. The Society honors achievement, rewards excellence, promotes good will and understanding, and celebrates service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Its first dinner was held in 1899 and agreed to meet annually at New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel although the 2019 dinner was held at the New York Hilton because the Waldorf is undergoing an extensive renovation.

Charitable Scholarships Awarded by the Pennsylvania Society

The Society awards annual scholarships to exceptional students through the Benjamin Franklin Scholarship Award program.  The yearly scholarship is a writing competition open to public high school students throughout the state. Entrants are given a selected Franklin quote and must write an essay on its modern-day relevance.

The Pennsylvania Society has had a second scholarship program in conjunction with the Maguire Foundation. The program was ended so the Society could focus on the essay competition. Tony Sherr is proud to be an active member of an organization that recognizes today’s Pennsylvania’s leaders and helps groom and educate the next generation.
